Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm in the world as of 2024, made landfall in northern Vietnam in early September, causing severe damage. With wind speeds reaching up to 220 km/h, the typhoon devastated Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces, leaving 49 people dead and 22 missing due to flooding and landslides. More than 5.7 million households lost power, many roads were flooded, and telecommunications systems were disrupted. In Hanoi, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding. Typhoon Yagi was recorded as the strongest storm in the world up to that point in 2024, and the most powerful typhoon to make landfall in the East Sea (South China Sea) in the past 30 years.

Khe Noi satellite campus of Dong Son Primary School is one of the most remote and underprivileged school sites in Ha Long City, with ethnic minority students making up 98% of the population. Typhoon Yagi caused severe damage to the school’s infrastructure: the main pathway collapsed completely, and the protective fence was swept away, putting children at risk on their way to class.

With the goal of aligning business growth with community development, Messer Group and Messer Vietnam aim to contribute their efforts to support the school in overcoming the aftermath of the natural disaster.

With financial support from... Messer SE & Co. KGaA and the volunteer spirit of the Messer Vietnam team, the project was comprehensively renovated with key components including: the construction of a new, secure school gate; installation of a sturdy fence along the edge of a deep stream; and the development of a green buffer zone to protect children from the dangerous hillside.

In addition, the staff of Messer Vietnam came together to contribute practical gifts for the students at the school site.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Anthony Grandpierre, Managing Director of Messer Southeast Asia, joyfully shared that Messer is committed to carrying out community-focused projects, especially those aimed at children — the future of society. He expressed hope that today’s small efforts would help nurture the big dreams of the students in the future. He encouraged the children to keep striving, overcome challenges, and stay confident in their journey to school.
